JSW Steel USA is seeking an Assistant UT Technician / UT Level I Technician to join its Quality Assurance team at its Baytown Pipe Mill. This position offers an excellent opportunity for individuals interested in building a career in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT), steel manufacturing, and quality control.
The successful candidate will work under the supervision of certified UT Level II personnel and support ultrasonic testing operations involving steel plate and SAW (Submerged Arc Welded) pipe production. Candidates will gain valuable experience working in one of North America’s leading steel manufacturing facilities.
Key Responsibilities
• Assist certified UT Level II Technicians in the inspection of steel plate and SAW pipe products.
• Support ultrasonic testing activities in accordance with company procedures, customer specifications, and applicable industry standards.
• Assist with equipment setup, calibration verification, and daily operational checks.
• Monitor automated and manual ultrasonic inspection systems during production.
• Identify and communicate discontinuities or indications to Level II personnel for evaluation.
• Record inspection data and maintain accurate inspection documentation.
• Assist in product traceability and quality record management.
• Maintain inspection equipment, reference standards, and work areas.
• Follow all safety, quality, and environmental procedures.
• Work closely with production and quality personnel to support manufacturing operations.
• Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisors and Level II inspectors.
Qualifications
• High School Diploma or GED required.
• UT Level I and II certification preferred but not required.
• Formal Ultrasonic Testing training is preferred.
• Basic understanding of NDT principles and ultrasonic testing methods.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality.
• Ability to read and follow written procedures and work instructions.
• Basic computer skills for data entry and reporting.
• Good communication and teamwork skills.
Preferred Qualifications
• Previous NDT, manufacturing, quality control, or steel industry experience.
• Familiarity with plate mill or pipe mill operations.
• Knowledge of ultrasonic testing equipment and inspection processes.
• Additional NDT certifications are a plus.
Physical Requirements
• Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.
• Ability to work in an industrial manufacturing environment.
• Ability to lift to 50 pounds.
• Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, and overtime as required.
• Ability to work around moving equipment and production machinery.
